Travel Advice Australia

Whether you are travelling to Australia with a sports travel operator to follow the Ashes, or going independently, you’ll want to be prepared. Apart from obvious advice such as being sure to apply liberal amounts of sunblock, there are a few other things to consider before boarding the plane.

Visa
Firstly, you’ll need a visa. This can be either a VISA or an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) applied for online through the Australian Department of Citizenship and Immigration.

Travel Insurance
It’s vital that you take out independent travel insurance, even if you’re using a tour operator. If you have a paid for premium bank account you may already be covered – if not, use an independent travel insurance company.

Staying Safe
Unless you fancy a go at being Crocodile Dundee, it’s unlikely you’ll be planning a trip to the outback during a Lions tour or Ashes cricket tour, and being bothered by crocs, snakes, poisonous spiders and sharks would be surprising at the stadium. However, if you’re planning to make the most of Australian beaches, make sure you’re familiar with the beach flag system. Swimmers should always stay between the yellow and red flags, and be aware that the Australian ocean has strong rips which can sweep away even the strongest of swimmers.
Crime is no worse than it is in the UK, but you should always keep your valuables close to you, and if there is an emergency, dialling 000 is the equivalent of 999.
