One day international cricket can be a fantastic spectacle when a batsman really gets going. International one-dayers have showcased some stunning batting talent and Wisden cricket reference book ranks the top five innings as:
5) Saeed Anwar, 194 vs India, 1997
The powerful Pakistani batsman devastated the Indian bowling attack in Chennai in 1997, finishing just short of a double-century.
4) Kapil Dev, 175* vs Zimbabwe, 1983
A superlative 175 not out was struck by legendary Indian batsman Kapil Dev against Zimbabwe in the 1983 Cricket World Cup in England. This was one of India’s most successful cricket tours and they went on to lift the trophy after beating the West Indies in the final.
3) Sanath Jayasuriya, 198 vs India, 2000
Sri Lankan all-rounder Sanath Jayasuriya smashed Indian bowlers to all parts in Sharjah in 2000, contributing to his unbeaten record of over 13,000 runs in one day internationals.
2) Viv Richards, 138* vs England, 1979
Sir Viv Richards has never felt intimidated by bowlers. When he batted he was in charge, and many bowlers suffered against this Antiguan batting titan. English bowlers suffered in this way in 1979 when Richards smashed 138 not out at Lords.
1) Viv Richards, 189* vs England, 1984
Sir Viv returned to England in 1984 to once again batter the English bowling attack. This time it was Old Trafford where the crowd was treated to a glorious batting display, and an astounding 198 runs from the indomitable West Indian.
